This reply was modified 1 year, 3 months ago by Dhruva_51. Not sure if there's a work around for this, may be I have to reset replication from scratch. We also encountered errors while setting up replication from replicas other than original publisher(node1) while setting replication for new databases which are not part of replication before. As all the publications appear under original publisher in replication monitor. #UPGRADE TO SQL SERVER 2012 R2 UPDATE#
If we decommission the node1 and node2 after moving to node3 and node4, we need to update distributor to look for new servers as actual publishers( I don't know how at this moment). We encountered a problem with replication, the redirect publisher is always looking for the Win 2012 (node1) from where we setup replication in first place.

The original plan is to add Win 2019 new nodes to cluster but to do that we have to upgrade our existing Win 2012 to Win 2016 and then join to Win 2019 nodes and decommission the old nodes. My test failed when tried to add 2019 node to 2012 cluster. Thanks Jeffery and Brian for your valuable inputs.
This topic was modified 1 year, 3 months ago by Dhruva_51. Consider the following points before you proceed: Ensure that you have installed and configured VCS 6.1. Also, planning to test OS upgrade from Win 2012R2 to Win 2019 in the first step to eliminate middle layer(to Win2016 then to Win2019) but thought it's a safe approach.Īppreciate if peers can weigh in on the approach and let me know if I am missing any steps. Before upgrading SQL Server 2012 to a service pack. Want to make sure we are doing it right way. There are few misleading articles we went through which were throwing us off but our tests showed no issues without any problems. Also, made sure to upgrade cluster functional level to 10 at the end. Now both nodes are on Win 2019 with replication and AG working as expected. In the final step updated node2 to Win 2019. Everything went well with setup node1(Win 2019 and SQL 2014) and node2( Win 2016 and SQL 2014). Made node2 primary replica and removed the node1 and upgraded it Win2019 and followed the same process. Now the current setup node1(Win2012R2 and SQL 2014) and node2(Win2016 and SQL 2014). Failed over to and fro multiple times and made sure replication and AGs behaving as expected. Upgraded the OS to Win2016(select option to keep files, not rebuild) on node2 and rejoined it to cluster and to AG as replica. #UPGRADE TO SQL SERVER 2012 R2 MANUAL#
We tested the below scenario on test environment:ĪG was set to manual failover and removed secondary replica from AG and evicted the node2 from cluster.

Click on ‘I accept the license terms’ option and select ‘Next’. On the next screen, select one option to indicate if you want to upgrade to a free edition or select another if you have the product key for License version. We want to upgrade OS to Win 2019 before working on SQL upgrade. To upgrade, click on Installation and then select Upgrade from SQL Server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2014.
Setup. We have a two node cluster(Win2012R2) with FS and has SQL server(SQL 2014) AG setup.

Important thing would be command-line parameters, that too i had already shared a link which Microsoft updates periodically on every release.Sample Install command line for SQL Server 2019 would be:. Update the physical exe if you could download & keep into folder else download-able link. Edit the install registry condition which you could easily find online. Create prq from any template of SQL Express pre-requisite. Hi further editing/creating pre-requisite,you can try doing yourself. Use Pre-requisite to install fresh SQL Express 2019 instance using conditions to validate existence.Below link can help more with installation command line parameters:. Mount SQL Server Media ISO/CD -> Run SQL Server. SQL Server 2012 is not supported on Windows Server 2003 and an in-place upgrade is not possible. Below link can help more with uninstallation command line parameters If your production instance of SQL Server 2005/2008/2008 R2 is installed on Windows Server 2003, you must upgrade to a new server by using a side-by-side upgrade. Add a custom action that could uninstall installed SQL 2012 Express based on condition if any which can be via Batch script or installscript custom action. You can add setup.exe command line to uninstall instance using LaunchAppAndWait function for an example.
Hi dont think you could achieve both upgrade & fresh installation scenario via Pre-requisite path.Hence it can be primarily used for installation based on various conditions. Here is what you can do:
